The Junior Guild 2015-2016 Provisional Class is working diligently to build upon the already established legacy and community commitment that the Junior Guild of Rocky Mount has upheld since its inception in 1937. To continue such efforts, we are soliciting your support in the completion of an outdoor classroom which will be utilized for Peacemakers of Rocky Mount’s Freedom School and after-school programs. Peacemakers, located in South Rocky Mount, is a community development, Christian organization whose mission is to provide the knowledge, skills and resources necessary for its members to lead successful and sustainable lives. Peacemakers’ mission is achieved through after-school programs, tutoring, education classes, food distribution, Freedom School and more. Freedom School is a summer enrichment program assisting children in low-income communities with reading. The outdoor classroom will be comprised of picnic tables, an outside chalkboard and a covering/shelter. We are also planning a reveal date for the classroom, tentatively scheduled for May 21, 2016 at 1 p.m. The total cost to create the classroom will be approximately $2,500. WE NEED YOUR HELP! We are seeking sponsorships from area businesses, community members as well as current and former Guild members. The Junior Guild of Rocky Mount, Inc. has established a credible reputation for assisting non-profit organizations within the Twin Counties and for meeting its mission of fostering interest among its members in the social, economic and civic conditions of the community. Peacemakers is no different, and is one such organization that can benefit from your philanthropy. Any amount that you can offer is appreciated. All checks should be made payable to: The Junior Guild of Rocky Mount, and mailed to the address below. Please put "Provisional Project" in the memo line of your check. By giving to this project, you are supporting a worthwhile cause in this community. According to theoutdoorclassroomproject.com, “the outdoor classroom evolves from the real needs of children, offers activities that are personally meaningful to them, and fully embraces developmentally appropriate practices in early care.” Thank you! The Junior Guild continues the tradition of volunteering for the Salvation Army this holiday season. The members and Provisional class sponsored 30 Angel Tree children and rang bells for donations at the Harris Teeter. The Salvation Army provides community activities and emergency assistance to Rocky Mount and the surrounding areas.
by Brie Handgraff Despite the rain, every mum the Rocky Mount Junior Guild secured for the annual autumn fundraiser was sold on September 26. “This was our largest sale yet and we are already looking forward to next year and selling even more with Wendy’s Mums,” said Katie Keeter. Each member was responsible for preselling seven mums at $15 each, but the annual fundraiser is highly anticipated and sales are never hard to gather. In fact, this year members presold 900 mums. “The entire community supports us and allows us to be successful every year with this mum sale,” Kristen Perry, vice president and fundraising chairwoman, said. She hopes next year to have “an even bigger sale and even more support from the community.” Patrons, such as Charles Tolan, braved the weather to buy two of the flowering plants for his fiancée, Karri Byrum. “(The mums) were all getting moved out,” Perry said. “People have come throughout the day, thankfully. People have come to get their mums so they can enjoy them at their house.” Fundraiser organizers expressed their appreciation to members. “A huge thank you to the Fundraising Committee and those that volunteered from the Guild for their hard work and help in moving 1000 mums the Friday and Saturday of the sale in the pouring rain,” said Keeter. “We could not have gotten everything together and completed without you all.” Click on the button below to download the newsletter.
For the past 78 years, the Junior Guild of Rocky Mount has been a benefactor to the well-being of the Rocky Mount community. During this past year, our tradition has continued through our various community service programs. These long-standing programs included Habitat for Humanity, Roadside cleanup for our Adopt-A- Street Program, and playing Senior Bingo with local nursing home residents. These residents always look forward to the fun and fellowship of our members. This year the guild established new placements at Injoy Thrift Store and the Hope Program. The longest enduring tradition is the Junior Guild puppet show. Members performed “The Little Red Hen,” which is a timeless story that reveals a valuable lesson to all. The Fundraising Committee had another great year. Several new fundraisers were added which increased revenues. This helped to continue to fund our three scholarships: General Scholarship Fund, Nash Community College Scholarship Fund, and Edgecombe Community College Scholarship Fund. This also helped fund our Community Trust Recipients: Association for Learning Disabled and Handicapped, Christian Fellowship Home of Nash-Edgecombe, Communities in Schools of Rocky Mount, and Down East Partnership for Children. Our membership had remarkable growth this year with our incoming Provisional class. Their provisional project is the “Little Library Project” which will promote literacy in our community. This can be yet another legacy of the Junior Guild. We are so excited about the energy, enthusiasm, and future leadership of our Provisional class. It is important to mention that we successfully restored Benvenue Country Club as our venue for meetings and social events. We are so happy to be back at this community landmark where guild members met for so many years. I would like to thank all guild members (board, committee chairs and co-chairs, active, provisional, and sustainers) for their dedication, hard work, and support this past year. This organization needs this continued united support of all members to grow, thrive, and carry on the traditions of those that led the way to where we are today. Many thanks, Maxie McGlohon, 2014-2015 President Each year the Provisional Class of the Junior Guild develops a project to improve the community. The 2014-2015 class decided literacy was an area they would like to improve so the initiated "Little Libraries." The class worked with others to build shelters that would house books throughout the community. The first Little Library was dedicated on May 19, 2015.
