Purpose

The Junior Guild Scholarship was established to provide funds for young women residing in the Rocky Mount area who desire to attend a four-year college or university.  The scholarship is based on financial need, scholastic excellence and outstanding citizenship. 

Requirements

The recipient will be awarded $3, 000.00 annually ($1,500.00 per semester up to $12,000 total over four years) as long as the following requirements are met:
  1. The recipient must remain a full-time student (as that term is defined by the recipient’s college or university of choice) in good standing academically for the four undergraduate years.
  2. The recipient must maintain a grade point average of 2.0 or above for each semester to receive their money.
  3. The recipient must maintain high standards of citizenship and conduct.
  4. The recipient must use the scholarship during four consecutive academic undergraduate years unless the Junior Guild Board of Directors grants an exception.
The recipient must supply a certified copy of her grade to the Rocky Mount Junior Guild each quarter or semester, and must request renewal of the Scholarship in writing to the Scholarship Chairman by July 1 of each year.  Failure to fulfill the academic and citizenship requirements of the Junior Guild Scholarship may result in probation for one semester or quarter, with terms thereof to be determined on an individual basis by the Junior Guild Scholarship Committee.  The Scholarship may be terminated if the recipient does not fulfill the terms of her probation.

Application Process

Each applicant must submit the application, accompanied by the following items, by April 1, 2022.

  1. Most recent certified high school transcript
  2. SAT or ACT scores
  3. Photograph of applicant
  4. Three letters of reference, at least one of which is from a teacher, principal, or counselor, and one from outside the student’s school experience
  5. An original, typed essay of at least 350 words describing where the applicant would like to be and what the applicant would like to be doing ten years from now
  6. FASFA

2022 Scholarship Recipient - Haley Holland 

The Scholarship Committee is honored and excited to share that we’ve selected Haley Holland as our 2022 Junior Guild Scholarship Recipient.  Haley is a graduate of North East Carolina Prep School of Tarboro with a 4.4 GPA. She has also graduated with an Associate in Science from Edgecombe Community College as a dual-enrolled student. 
Along with volunteering at local community events and organizations, Haley was a member of the National Honor Society, Academic Scholar, and National Senior Beta Club. While in high school, Haley was a varsity volleyball team member and captain her senior year. She accomplished all this while working full and part-time.
This fall Haley is attending the honors program at Western Carolina University where she will be majoring in Biology. She plans to attend medical school to become an OB-GYN, and her future goals include opening a practice in an underserved area in North Carolina to help make holistic medical practices accessible to all. She also plans to further her learning in speaking the Spanish language in order to better serve the Spanish-speaking community. In her free time, Haley enjoys camping and hiking and spending time with her family and friends.

2021 Scholarship Recipient - Zinia Greene

Zinia graduated from Northern Nash High School with a 4.0 Cumulative GPA. During high school, she has been involved in Marching Band, Concert Band, Cheerleading, National Honors Society, and the Knight Ambassador program. Zinia has had the opportunity to audition for All-District and was selected to play with other great instrumentalists from our district at East Carolina University. Along with volunteering for different organizations for the National Honors Society, she also had the opportunity to volunteer at Nash UNC Hospital in every department and had the unique opportunity to watch several heart surgeries. In the midst of all of her studies and volunteer work, she started her own business called Zinia’s Hair Boutique where her mission is to make women with all different hair textures and backgrounds feel beautiful and confident while preserving and embracing their natural beauty. Throughout high school, she has been taking nursing classes and as of June 3rd, is officially a Certified Nursing Assistant. She will begin working at Nash UNC Hospital in 2 weeks. She will further her education at UNC Charlotte where she will major in Nursing and minor in Global Health with aspirations to become a travel nurse and hairstylist. Her mission is to help change the way caregivers medically care for minorities by establishing a program that will help educate and train caregivers on the importance of understanding diverse backgrounds to better a patient’s experience and outcome. Zina states “Not only do I see myself as a caregiver and creator, but I also see myself as a leader and innovator.”

2020 Scholarship Recipient - Victoria Spivey

​Victoria Spivey is our 2020 Scholarship Recipient. Victoria is graduating 4th in her class with a 4.3 GPA, from Nash Central High School. During high school, Victoria participated in athletics and was a member of the National Honor Society. Victoria has had the opportunity to attend the NC Governor's School and participated in the Shelton Leadership Challenge. Victoria has done all these things while volunteering within her community and has spent time serving with Ripple Effect, an outreach organization serving both the Twin Counties. Victoria will be attending Wake Forest University this Fall and is planning to study Biology. Victoria shared with the interview committee that she has future aspirations to be a pediatric surgeon and inspire young girls to see successful professional women who look like them.

2019 Scholarship Recipient - Sarah Hicks 
​
Sarah is graduating, as salutatorian with a 4.5 GPA, from Nash Central High School. During high school, Sarah was a varsity member of the Cross-Country team, the Swim team, and participated in Track and Field. Sarah has qualified at the state level in all three sports across multiple years. She has been named as both the Track and Field Conference Player of the Year and the Girls' Swimmer of the Year. During her senior year, Sarah also served as the President of the National Honor Society. Sarah has done all these things while maintaining a job at the YMCA, serving as a life guard and gymnastics coach. Sarah will be attending East Carolina University this Fall and is planning to study Biomedical Engineering. Sarah shared with the inter view committee that she has future aspirations to make prosthetic limbs
more affordable and accessible to children and youth living in rural regions.

2018 Scholarship Recipient - Meredith Sides 

​Meredith is the Salutatorian of the Class of 2018 at Rocky Mount High School. In addition to volunteering at local schools, she was the captain of the swim team and a member of several organizations. She is the daughter of Nelson and Hope Sides. Meredith looks forward to attending UNC-Chapel Hill to become a pharmacist.

2017 Scholarship Recipient - Erin Brinkley

​Erin was a 2017 graduate of Rocky Mount High School and is currently attending Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. She is in the honors program and is majoring in American Sign Language - English Interpretation. She started learning American Sign Language in 7th grade and fell in love with the language and culture. Her goal after college is to work as a sign language interpreter in the education system. On campus, Erin is involved with Cru, the Student Interpreting Association and an intramural soccer team. In her free time, Erin loves to sing, hike outdoors and volunteer at anything involving kids.

2014 Scholarship Recipient - Burklee Bradley

​Burklee is in her 4th year at East Carolina University. She will graduate in May 2018 with a BA in Psychology, BA in Hispanic Studies, and minor in science. Apart from her studies, she volunteers at a crisis center, conducts research alongside faculty at ECU, and works part-time.  She plans to attend a PhD program in the Fall of 2018 for Clinical Health Psychology. In the future, She would like to continue researching and ultimately open her own private practice to provide psychological services to underserved communities in eastern NC. In an effort to maximize her potential as a future psychologist, She has studied abroad in Spain and is currently working on learning the Spanish language.  In her free time, she enjoy traveling, volunteering, and spending time with my friends and family.
